Like many casino games, the history of poker is a disputed one. It is stated by some that the game was born as a German game (Pochen, meaning to knock) and evolved by way of France (known as Poque). It is not certain that these terms are what 'poker' derived from though. It is more likely that the poker as we know today had a number of different origins and influences. These games include the Persian game of 'as nas', the Renaissance game of 'primero', and the French game 'brelan'. It is well documented that the concept of 'bluffing' derived from the English game of 'brag'.

The game of poker grew in popularity in the U.S.A through times of the 'wild west' and with Mississippi River boat casinos adopting the game and spreading across the nation. It is likely most of the poker variations emerged around these times.

Community card poker emerged during the Second World War. Omaha poker derived as a variant of the most popular Texas Hold'em with the intention of creating a slightly more complex poker game.
