Identifying Tells In Live Play

by Simon Dexter Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Hi Guys
I appreciate that playing online differs in several ways from playing live, but apart from the obvious difference when it comes to identifying tells, are there any other subtle nuances this regular online player should look for when playing live?

Book review: The Ultimate Guide to Poker Tells, by Randy Burgess & Carl Baldassarre

by Simon Dexter Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

In many respects, Mike Caro’s classic “Caro’s Book of Poker Tells” remains the definitive work on the subject, yet it’s interesting to note that despite the incredible number of poker-related books published since it was first published, few have sought to develop Caro’s themes. Now Burgess and Baldassarre (B&B) endeavour to do so in their enjoyable, informative text.

Online Tells

by Simon Dexter Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Hi,

I read recently (not here) that online poker players who call a raise a little too quickly are likely to be on a draw. Armed with this information, I re-raised an opponent I saw do this and duly ran straight into a monster hand. I ended up getting busted out of the tournament simply because I thought I had picked-up an online tell. What did I do wrong?

Book review: Caro’s Book of Poker Tells

by Simon Dexter Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Caro’s Book of Poker Tells, by Mike Caro

For many poker players, this book really is the daddy of them all, a compelling, thought-provoking read from the “Mad Genius of Poker” himself, Mike Caro.

I saw Caro speak at Trinity College in Dublin a few years ago when the way he explained his psychological concepts and intricate ideas ensured he had his audience in the palm of his hand. Having heard him talk ‘live’ makes this book a much easier read (if you’ll excuse the pun) as the focal point of his scientific concepts is the rather difficult notion of interpreting what an opponent is actually saying without him uttering a word. Even if science was not your thing at school, stick with this book because when Caro says he teaches us how to “use the science of tells – and win”, he’s not kidding.

Playing Under the Gun

by Simon Dexter Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Whenever I’m playing under the gun, my attitude changes completely. Even after quite a few years playing poker, it still makes me feel as though I’m in a heads-up confrontation with Doyle Brunson. Is this because I’m an inherently conservative player (I need a great hand to become aggressive), a wimp, or have not yet understood the correct strategy for playing and winning when under the gun?

The Business of Poker

by Simon Dexter Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

A TV advert for online poker which suggests that the only difference between businessmen and poker players is the table they sit around has provoked a tongue-in-cheek response from the business writer over at canada.com.

The article compares the two very different types of people “…..gamblers play with their own money, take monumental risks, and when they don’t pan out, go broke. CEOs play with your money, take monumental risks, and when they don’t pan out walk away with multimillion-dollar severance packages, while you go broke.”

Breathtaking Poker Hand

by Simon Dexter Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

I just love watching poker on TV (check out the Poker TV guide on this site if you do too) and the other day I witnessed the most amazing set of starting cards I had ever seen and the drama of this poker hand continued until the very last card.

Learning Discipline and coping with Tilt

by Simon Dexter Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

Poker is the type of game that can make players feel as though they can literally walk on water. Occasionally, things are going so well that the cards turn perfectly and even outrageous poker bets come off, but as in life, just when it looks as though you’re ready to hit the big time, the wheels can come off with a vengeance.
