Perhaps the bright spark in the City who, when confronted with this week’s stock market mayhem, still reckoned there was a better chance of backing a winning share than succeeding at poker, needs some additional poker odds tuition.

You may have read recently about club owner who insisted that because poker was a game of skill, his establishment would not require a licence under the 1968 Gaming Act, legislation which applies solely to games of chance.

Hi,
Like most people, I’m more than happy to ‘muck the ducks’ when, in early position, I pick up pocket deuces in a nine-handed game. Similarly, if I’m dealt a pair of kings, I’m comfortable raising from any position, irrespective of the game’s stakes.

The next time anyone starts rabbiting on about whether poker is a game of skill or chance, ask them to explain how the stock market works.
Although natural ability is useful when it comes to being successful at either, the fact is that with application, dedication and resolve, most people can perform perfectly adequately at the table or on a trading floor.
