Book review - The Poker Mindset
By Ian Taylor & Matthew Hilger
It’s unusual for a book which focuses on how poker should be played not to make any reference to individual hands, specific cards or chip counts, although it’s for this very reason that The Poker Mindset is such an interesting read. There are innumerable publications dealing with how hand A or B should be played or how precarious situation C or D may be avoided, but Taylor and Hilger concentrate instead upon the attitudes that make a successful poker player.

You may have read recently about club owner who insisted that because poker was a game of skill, his establishment would not require a licence under the 1968 Gaming Act, legislation which applies solely to games of chance.

Hi,
Like most people, I’m more than happy to ‘muck the ducks’ when, in early position, I pick up pocket deuces in a nine-handed game. Similarly, if I’m dealt a pair of kings, I’m comfortable raising from any position, irrespective of the game’s stakes.

Most of us have our own way of dealing with a bad beat: there’s the stiff upper lip approach, which entails saying nothing while nodding as softly as possible, perhaps taking a deep breath as your inside churns and your mind races with evil thoughts of revenge. Then there’s the uncontrollable sort who blurts out exactly what he’s thinking, a process which can include some pretty nasty references to your opponent’s legitimacy and that of his father.

Professor Richard Wiseman, who gained his doctorate in psychology from the University of Edinburgh, is perhaps the only man in the country paid to research the effects of luck and deception. They’re two fascinating subjects, especially for poker players, so it’s little wonder that his book, The Luck Factor, an obscure academic title when first published in 2004, has suddenly become the hottest publication of the year for students of the game.

“Poison Paws” has always been used as a slightly derogatory phrase to describe dealers who continue to deal you lousy hands all night – or at least until you’ve realised it’s time to leave the table and try your luck elsewhere.
However, according to a US television report on Monday, the phrase is in danger of becoming a euphemism for poker players trying their luck in Arizona after the station, KNXV-TV, reported that poker chips manufactured by Paulson, one of the biggest names in casino chip manufacture, may contain high levels of lead.

Given the constant rantings of politicians in the name of debate, it seems odd that no-one has latched onto the idea of using poker to tame our increasingly unruly teenagers. Better still, how about looking at the possibilities of using poker as a teaching tool.
