When in Vegas, use your breaks well

Author: Simon Dexter

Writing in the Houston Chronicle this week, Daniel Negreanu pondered over the forthcoming WSOP* and said that the winner will be the one who uses the competition’s (rather stingy) breaks to their best advantage.

Negreanu believes the competition’s relentless schedule will benefit those players who “study video of their opponents, seek expert coaching advice and work on their game plans”.
His logic is based on American Football which, he says, improved markedly when teams began studying their opponents by watching videos of the games.

By the time the names of the nine contestants making the WSOP* Main Event final table is known, each finalists will have almost two months to study footage of their opponents, assuming they know beforehand who they’re going to play. This is impossible, which means instead that astute finalists will spend their breaks playing as little poker as possible in order to remain fresh and sharp, ready for the final push. Playing during the comfort breaks will not only leave players jaded, it could also prove incredibly messy.
