Las Vegas is famed for its virtually limitless supply of moderately-priced hotel rooms, but at this time of the year rates invariably surge as thousands of players, together with their families and sponsors, assemble for the WSOP*.
While a considerable number of high rollers continue to pile into Vegas on ‘comp’ deals, ‘economy’ rooms (which are usually the equivalent of a four-star room in a British hotel) are in great demand. So hats off to a clutch of seven establishments (Bally’s, Caesars Palace, Flamingo, Harrah’s, Imperial Palace, Paris, and the Rio) for offering rates as low as (£30) a night to guests / players who pre-register. They’re practical enough to appreciate that anyone cashing during the tourney may fancy changing hotels.
However, an additional benefit of staying at one of these hotels is that they’re all within a relatively short cab ride of the WSOP centre. Many people could find themselves tempted by outstanding rates on offer at hostelries further out of town, but any savings can soon be eaten up with surprisingly steep cab fares.
In addition to plugging inexpensive hotel rooms, as the credit crunch’s grip becomes firmer, so cost-conscious competitors in Vegas are also being given guides to the best value restaurants.
Three of the best are the “Golden Steer Steak House” which, according to one guide: “gives diners a wonderful feel of what Old Vegas was like; wood-panelled walls are covered in tributes to some of the older celebrities like the Rat Pack, who used to dine there often.” Old Vegas? Still, a top of the range prime rib is available for .
For dessert, how about the “Luv It Custard Shop”, where the establishment’s own frozen custard is offered for just ?
Finally, there’s “Ricardo’s” on West Flamingo Road, winner of the city’s ‘Best Mexican’ restaurant award for 20 of the past 25 years and where the burritos are described as being: “very big and filled with a healthy dose of meat, beans and cheese.”
