The fifth leg of the 2007/08 EPT is scheduled to come to an exciting conclusion in Prague. We’ll have a full report on the outcome next week, but as we go to press, it is evident that the EPT’s relentless appeal shows no sign of flagging, not least because of the prize money on offer.
This becomes immediately apparent when the 2007/08 season’s statistics are compared with last year, (season three).
Excluding Prague, four events have taken place (in Barcelona, London, Baden and Dublin) this season, making it possible to compare like-for-like tournaments. The increasing scale of the prize pool immediately catches the eye; having risen by more than 80% for the opening event in Barcelona, (from 2.3 million euros last year to 4.18 million euros this year), at each venue this season, winners have collected at least 530,000 euros. Moreover, the aggregate prize pool had exceeded 10 million euros before a card was dealt in Prague this week, an increase of 29.8% on the same stage last term.
The impact upon the winner’s cheque has been similarly dramatic. After four events last season, the quartet of winners had picked up 2.2 million euros; by the time the fourth leg had finished in Dublin the other week, this figure had risen by a staggering 33% to 2.98 million euros.
After the action ends in Prague, there are four EPT tournaments (in Germany, Denmark, Poland and Italy) for which it is still possible to qualify before the Grand Final takes place in Monte Carlo in April. Find out how you can qualify, click here.
