Sands not content with Vegas

Author: Simon Dexter

While most of us might be suffering from post-Christmas blues and dreading the dull thud of the latest credit card bill as it tumbles through the letterbox, there appear to be no such concerns in the Far East.

Last week, the Sands corporation announced it had secured funding of .7 billion to build a casino-hotel complex in Singapore. The city state legalised casino gambling in 2005 and has pledged to permit two casino-resorts to be constructed as part of a plan to double annual visitor arrivals over the next seven years.

The construction is one further example of Sands’ expansion into Asia – last year the company opened the Venetian Macao casino hotel in China and the day after it announced the Singapore project, it revealed that its proposed construction of a casino in the Chinese city of Zhuhai had been approved. The company’s share price rocketed by 11% on the news – proof that the world’s poker players have more commercial influence than many governments give them credit for.
