On a similar theme, author David Apostolico has published a new book aimed at assisting not only the poker player but the budding businessman too.
“Poker Strategies for a Winning Edge in Business” examines the successful poker player’s principle skills and subsequently applies them to the commercial world. Apostolico analyses the thinking associated with making effective decisions at the table, especially when a player opts to jettison seemingly attractive, but ultimately losing hands while disguising his true intentions. There are, he maintains, distinct similarities with the skills required at the poker table and those essential for business success.
Apostolico has become a prolific author of poker books, each of which are designed to make the reader think: his “Machiavellian Poker” and “Tournament Poker and the Art of War” are particularly good reads.
However, there are several authors currently jumping on the poker band-wagon and linking the game with successful parenting, writing, shopping and a host of other areas that have little or no affinity with the game.
Although it turned out to be an April Fool, one ‘author’ recently claimed to have written a book entitled: “The Winner’s Guide to Dating: What I Learned About Love and Sex from Playing Texas Hold’em”. Purported to be the first book to make a connection between poker and sex, not only the title but the whole idea of linking poker playing to anything was the joke. Unfortunately, we’re likely to continue to see titles such as “How playing poker helps me eat breakfast”, or “Jogging and poker” hogging space on WH Smith’s bookshelves for some time yet.
