It is surprising the type of people who you will interact with in an online poker game. A friend of mine has just started playing so I thought I’d ask her a few questions to see how much she knows about the game of Texas Hold ‘Em.
What is the best hand – three fours and two fives or 10, J , Q, K, A?
K: The second one…is it called a street or something?
What is the flop?
Is it something you do or is it a name of a hand?
If someone told you that you were ‘Under The Gun’, what would they mean?
K: You are in a situation where you have to go on but your cards are bad. You’ve got a bad hand.
What is a bad beat?
K: When you lose although your hand is very high but someone else’s is higher.
What is the rake?
K: A rake is when you change all your cards
What is a gunshot draw?
K: When you raise and you put the next player under pressure.
If someone ‘limps in’, what have they done?
K: Probably, this isn’t right. Go one round and quit the next round of betting.
If you get ‘flushed down the river’, what has happened?
K: When you have got three hearts or three of a kind. You just got three.
If you ‘check-raise’, what have you done?
K: Maybe a tactic where you raise but want to quit next round anyway.
If you are ‘on the button’, where are you sitting?
K: The last in the round.
If you are ‘short stacked’, what does that mean?
You don’t have so much money to play with.
What is a deuce?
K: When you start with a higher bet. I was thinking about Il Duce - Mussolini.
If you ‘draw dead’, what has happened?
K: When you raise so much and think the other people can’t go with you.
If you are playing ‘Head’s Up’, what’s happening?
K: Another way of playing cards. You don’t see your cards and then the cards are opened.
Ok, this is a bit of a silly example as this player only plays for very small stakes and has a bit of fun. However, there are still plenty of people out there who are not as good as they think.
Of course it is not vital to know all the terms when playing poker but it is worth swotting up on some of the most important terms before getting started.
