The Who famously asked (without a question mark) Who are you. It is a question that every poker player needs to ask themselves and only an honest answer will allow them to move on and become a better player.
Tight-Aggressive
If you want to play profitable poker then this is the style you will most likely want to adopt. You know your pot odds, you know how to play before the flop, you shouldn’t be reading this article.
Similar to a successful horse race gambler you understand when the odds are in your favour, you bet accordingly and are not afraid to lose. Most importantly, you know when to walk away if the odds have shifted slightly against you and have the patience to wait until the right opportunity.
Loose-Aggressive
You are a popular guy at the poker table but it’s not your bluster and bravado that people admire. People like you because they can take your money off you. Being loose and aggressive you will win many pots, sometimes some big pots but mainly small ones. While it may boost your ego playing in this style in the long run it won’t swell your bankroll.
Any sensible poker player will just sit and wait until they have a good hand and then they will pounce, gobble you up and spit you out. They are quite happy to fold 10 times to your aggression before snapping back.
Loose-Passive
Another popular player. Not because of your affable nature, quick play and grating politeness but because you are the most predictable and common type of player that will sit round any real or online card table.
You will call and check at will and be involved in far too many hands. Your main weakness is that you believe you will get some luck on the flop or on the turn or on the river. On yer bike.
Tight-Passive
You might think you’ve got this game worked out but why are you not winning? You know about pot odds and you understand good starting hands but the main problem is your passivity. It becomes predictable and players soon work you out. You too, may win a few hands but your bankroll stash will leak slowly away.
Some people still embrace this style of play on the internet because there as so many bad players about, but in the long run and when you start to increase your stakes, you will not last long once people work you out.
It is worth reading up about how best to play against all these types of player as every table you play at will be unique. The really successful players know how to mix up their game to avoid being labelled a certain type but the first thing some people may want to do is adopt the style of the Tight-Aggressive player.
