Breathtaking Poker Hand

Author: Simon Dexter

I just love watching poker on TV (check out the Poker TV guide on this site if you do too) and the other day I witnessed the most amazing set of starting cards I had ever seen and the drama of this poker hand continued until the very last card.

It’s the type of thing that will no doubt pop up on Youtube so if you want to have a look do a search, otherwise please follow my attempted commentary: Six players left at the table with Player 1 getting pocket kings. ‘Lovely’, he thinks as he throws a few thousand into the pot. Next to him, Player 2 receives pocket queens.

Usually a great hand, but with his opponent sitting on kings this looks very dangerous. Nevertheless Player 2 does what he has to and calls. The third player has a nice hand of Ace King unsuited but he has seen what has been happening and quickly folds. Next up to show his cards to the TV cameras is Player 4. Pocket Aces. Absolutely unreal! Pocket aces, pocket kings and pocket queens all in the same poker hand. Player 4 tries to draw his opponents with a crafty slow play but he looks confident enough and eventually goes all-in. The two guys to his left amazingly have pocket fives and pocket eights. I’ve never seen so many pocket cards in one hand!

It’s back to Player 1 with his pocket kings. Now, any good card player will tell you this is not a hand to fold. However, this player is taking his time and suddenly folds. He smells the rat and gets out. The pressure is now on the player with pocket queens. In a stronger position with his chips size, he calls the all-in. His face drops as he sees his opponents Aces. The odds are not in his favour. Player 4 looks smug for his great bit of reading!

The flop brings down a two, a three and a king! Poor Player 4 is looking distraught after knowing what could have been. The odds are still very much in Player 1’s favour as the turn reveals a four.

Only one card will do Player 2 on the river - a queen. And the lady comes! Against all the odds, the river comes to help Player 2 and blows the man with pocket aces right down the river and out of the game. Compelling poker strategy at its finest!
