It’s not quite the Arctic Monkeys, but news arrives of a debut single scheduled for release next week by a band called SitNGO. The song, entitled Flush Draw is described in a colourful press release as “a poker parody”.
A call to the PR company handling the song’s release suggests they haven’t quite got their homework right. “As far as we’re aware,” says an extremely helpful lady, “ this is the first pop song ever to deal with poker. Given the game’s enormous popularity, we feel it’s quite timely.”
Actually, poker has frequently appeared in song, but the PR lady was so pleasant, we didn’t have the heart to tell her.
One of the best known tunes is You’re My Best Poker Hand by T-Bone Walker, a Bluesy number which opens with “I need a queen like you to make my hand okay” and goes on to describe a poker game which culminates with “his face turned pale when he saw my queen high flush.”
Of course, the game lends itself to double entendre as Fleetwood Mac’s Lazy Poker Blues, released on the band’s Mr Wonderful album in August 1968 proved. The song’s introduction suggests some chilled-out poker playing with the line “some lazy poker goin’ on”. However, when the ballad’s male singer reveals that his partner will be keeping his poker warm, listeners realise the song has adapted a decidedly more sensual tone…
