The Best Damn Poker Show

Author: Simon Dexter

Just when we didn’t need another TV reality show, the Americans have produced a programme called The Best Damn Poker Show which has received mixed reviews.

The premise is fairly simple - two poker professionals watch a group of hopefuls playing poker and slowly weed out the bad ones. After a little training from the pros, it is expected the show could have a few decent poker players on their hands.

The problem seems to lie in who the TV company has picked to front the show and the presence of Phil Hellmuth and Annie Duke seems to have rattled a few cages.

Over at allpokeraddicts.com, Blake is not a happy man.

“Oh god, they’ve let the two most annoying players in poker have their own show.” he begins.

“This is hardly a poker show. This is a venting booth for two of the biggest promotional sluts in poker to air their loins.” the blogger continues trying his best to stay on the fence.

“So it’s not about good poker, it’s about who’s cooler: Annie or Phil. And god, they think they are special. They act like they are deciding which state should be deleted from the U.S. map.

“I think a whole 6 minute segment of the show I saw consisted of Phil Hellmuth saying how Annie and Howard Lederer both like to get all their money in with hands like pockets 8s. Annie freaks out, crying, saying it’s okay for him to insult her, but not her brother, because her brother’s not here to defend himself. They go back and forth over this for quite some time repeating one another, as if it’s the most important thing in the world.”

Balance those comments with the official press release.

“The ultimate poker reality series follows 18 poker players on two teams led by world poker champions Phil Hellmuth and Annie Duke, as they battle it out over seven weeks. More than just money is at stake in this televised battle. Egos are on the line as the two poker pros try to prove who’s the better poker professor.”

The release continues: “Despite the endless heads-up Texas hold ‘em battles between Phil Hellmuth and Annie Duke at online poker tables, it’s unlikely that the age-old debate regarding which pro is the better poker player will ever be settled. Best Damn Poker Show aims to discover who can better teach the game and mold ordinary poker players into champions.”
Blake, our erstwhile TV critic, sums up his post on the show nicely when closing with…..”I’d rather chew on the butt end of a cordless drill than watch this ridiculous crap again.”
