Cricketer Shane Warne is no stranger to text messaging. Many will recall the ‘explicit’ message sent by the father-of-three to a 22 year-old New Zealand woman a few years back, while his playful activities with a pair of young fillies in a London flat were recorded for posterity on a phone camera. For Shane, his mobile is clearly an essential piece of kit.

However, perhaps someone should have told him that it’s bad form to use it while playing poker in a high-profile, televised event.

Last weekend the Aussie cricket legend let his fingers do the walking and started sending a text message while playing in a poker tournament Down Under. The shocked tournament director considered it just not cricket and duly sin-binned the portly one for five minutes.

He can expect even harsher punishment should he perform similar antics at this year’s WSOP scheduled to start on 30 May. “Warney” is apparently intending to play in Vegas, a commitment which came as news to Hampshire, his county cricket side, who could face the new season without their inspirational captain.

Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove said: “We’re confident he will be back, but we’ll have to start the season with someone different. I’ll chat with Shane and work out a sensible cricket program for both of us.” Mr Bransgrove may get a faster response if he sends the loveable Warney a text.
