“Poison Paws” has always been used as a slightly derogatory phrase to describe dealers who continue to deal you lousy hands all night – or at least until you’ve realised it’s time to leave the table and try your luck elsewhere.
However, according to a US television report on Monday, the phrase is in danger of becoming a euphemism for poker players trying their luck in Arizona after the station, KNXV-TV, reported that poker chips manufactured by Paulson, one of the biggest names in casino chip manufacture, may contain high levels of lead.
The station says it sent two hundred Paulson chips for laboratory testing, the results of which showed that every single one contained high surface lead levels. KNXV-TV also revealed that one chip, which originated in an unnamed “popular Vegas casino”, contained no less than 45% lead. Do these people know just how much lead is currently worth?
Gerard Charlier, chief executive of Gaming Partners International, which manufactures the Paulson chips, said “testing has also demonstrated that the simple handling of these chips would not produce any risk of health concerns to the consumer.” Nevertheless, he added that new chips contain lead levels well below the applicable safety standards.
The revelations may bother some land-based casino visitors, but positive types will appreciate that they provide an excellent excuse to play online where there is absolutely no need to handle chips, irrespective of their constituent parts. So get online to Littlewoods Poker now and protect those paws.
