When Swiss watchmaker Corum announced a six-year deal with Harrahs Entertainment last year to become the official timepiece of the World Series of Poker, the company probably intended their watches should become one of the most sought-after poker accessories, especially at Christmas.
The PR blurb accompanying the announcement wasted no time in explaining to players just how exclusive the watches would be. “To mark the partnership, Corum will design unique timepieces for players that make it to the final table of the WSOP Main Event, as a souvenir to commemorate the occasion,” it declared, adding, “It is to be expected that those timepieces will become collection [sic] items coveted by poker amateurs worldwide, as the measure of a man is often expressed by what ornaments his wrist.”
If, however, the diamond-encrusted, crocodile-strapped timepiece fails to hit the mark or makes too big a dent in your pocket, our dedicated research team here at Littlewoods Poker have scoured the internet in an effort to provide you with alternative Christmas pressies.
One of our favourites (which has nothing to do with the site’s photos) is available at redkisses.co.uk where a ‘Strip Poker Set’ is offered for £11.95. Actually, we didn’t think you’d need much, but we’re told an enclosed handbook offers “tips and techniques [to] give you an upper hand when it comes to stripping away the layers of fun.” The package includes “Strip Poker playing cards and saucy chips.” Wives and girlfriends will, no doubt, absolutely love it.
Alternatively, at pokershop.co.uk you could invest £3 in a black garter, or £4 in a dealer visor, but our favourite here was the musical clockwork clowns playing poker – yours for just forty quid – although we’re not sure about the message that sends out about poker players…
As you might imagine, there is plenty of bling, from replica WSOP bracelets (.95) – we assume they’re not gold – to 14k gold pendants in the shape of a diamond, heart, club or spade. Classy. If you’re desperately hunting for poker apparel, then the internet’s your lobster: how about a hoodie from cafepress.com emblazoned with ‘Poker Stud’ on it? This height of originality is yours for a mere .99.
However, our favourite Christmas gift for the poker player who has everything is not a Corum watch or yet another aluminium-cased poker set but the Greg Raymer ‘Bobblehead’ doll. This 7” figurine is, according to the retailers, “created with the utmost integrity and attention to detail using the player’s own creative input towards the final design. The result captures the player’s unique features, demeanour, and attire. We even show them holding their favourite two starting cards.” Certainly one for the stocking!
