New Year’s Resolutions: Part 1

Author: Simon Dexter

As we arrive at the time of the year when resolutions are called for, we’ve created a ready-made list which other poker players may wish to emulate:
1. Ignore bad beats. I promise not to blow my top when these invariably happen. Why? Well, apart from being bad for my blood pressure, even when I’m the bolt-on favourite to win, I know I can still end up losing. So whenever I’ve pushed with top set, only to be aced by the guy chasing the inside-straight draw, (the same one who earlier called down the pot with second pair), I promise not to want to inflict physical violence upon my opponent.
2. Know when to stop. A well-known poker pro told me that had he stopped playing when on a cold streak, he reckoned he would have been over 0,000 ahead of the game. If I can persuade myself to switch the computer off when I’m adrift, I’ll be delighted.
3. Grow up. Following our recent piece on Gino “El Diablo” Alacqua, the 46-year-old Sicilian who finished second in the EPT Prague event earlier this month, I will start dressing appropriately when playing poker. The dopey sunglasses will be jettisoned because sadly, they do not make me look as cool as Phil Ivey, but more like a cross between Julian Clary and Jonathan Ross, neither of whom has been considered cool since the early 1980s.
4. Do what you’re best at. I’ve enjoyed playing poker since I was a schoolboy, which has given me time to establish my level and to acknowledge that I’m unlikely to win next year’s WSOP. I will, therefore, focus on games where I know I have an edge, a move designed to keep me away from any fancy / 0 games.
5. Enter more tournaments. Tournament play is terrific fun and gets the adrenalin going like nothing else. You stand a chance of competing in a major tournament for less than the cost of watching a football match for 90 minutes, which has to be a no-brainer; the aim is to make at least one big tournament during 2008.
