Many of us will have been alternating between playing online poker while watching part or all of this week’s Euro 08 matches, although on some occasions it’s been difficult to stay awake watching the footy – Holland v Italy excepted.
To date, there have been two contenders for worst match of the tournament: France v Romania and Sweden v Greece.
The French, supposedly packed with Gallic flair and talent could only fire blanks against a Romanian side seemingly content to avoid an embarrassing defeat, whereas Sweden, on paper boasting outstanding players of the calibre of Lundjberg and Ibrahimovich fared little better against reigning champions Greece.
While watching both of these mind-numbingly dull encounters, we were reminded of comments by poker veterans Lou Krieger and Richard Harroch who summed up one of poker’s most vital talents: the ability to take advantage of your opponent’s mistakes. “Most of the money you’ll win at poker comes not from the brilliance of your own play,” the pair wrote, “but from the ineptitude of your opponents.” Given the thoroughly inept performances of the above-mentioned quartet, anyone backing them to win Euro 08 could probably discard their betting slip now.
