I have my own views on ladies-only tournaments but others may feel differently. All I can say is that I was very disappointed with the news that there is to be a ladies World Poker Tour.
Now, I’m not against women playing poker - in fact my favourite online player is Annette “Annette_15″ Obrestad - but the thought of women-only poker tournaments does make me a little annoyed and smacks a little of the preposterous notion that women are the weaker sex.
The tour in question will feature a ladies league and a No Limit Texas Hold ‘Em tournament circuit.
“Women are a rising force in poker,” said one of the organisers. “By bringing a WPT ladies league and tour stops to top gaming destinations across the US, we hope to support and perpetuate the evolution of the sport and recognition of the women who play.”
The marketing spiel for this horrible idea continues:
“Season 1 of the WPTL tour kicks off January 20 in New York with additional dates in Los Angeles and California. The tour will conclude with a $1,500 Championship tournament at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, which will also host a player party in conjunction with the event.
The WPTL Championship final table will be filmed on the WPT set for television broadcast on WPT’s new network home, GSN, in 2008. The winner will receive the first place cash prize and the WPT Ladies’ Championship title.
Mein Gott, as the Germans say, and more on the Germans shortly. But for now I will say that if I ever find a ladies-only poker tournament on this site it will be time to leave.
Meanwhile, have you got any views on this topic? Please log-in and leave a comment. It would be interesting to hear from women poker players - though I must stress I do not have a ladies-only comment policy.
