How playing poker can help you win the girl (or boy)

Author: Simon Dexter

If you were to think about the impact that poker may have had upon your relationships, it might be possible to recall a few instances where the amount of time you spend playing with your mates or playing online has caused a partner to utter a few disapproving words. If this sounds like a scenario with which you’re occasionally familiar, then Tim Howard’s latest book, “The Underground Economist” is probably worth a read.

In it, Howard tackles real-life situations and attempts to show how a poker player’s often unique decision-making process impacts upon his everyday life.

This practical dissection of decision-making involves an examination of classic game-theory, the same method used by Chris “Jesus” Ferguson when he won the Poker World Championship in 2000. Howard approaches the concept of love and marriage as a basic balance of supply (what partners are available) and demand (what your desires are) and indicates that a player may settle for less in one aspect to get greater benefits in another, or that the player may be holding out for the big money jackpot. You still with me?

Admittedly, after a few drinks on a Friday night, all rational thought may be out the window, a potentially fatal flaw in Howard’s thinking, but if you’re a decent poker player who might be lacking success on the love field, perhaps it’s time to consider applying your card skills to the pursuit of wooing a new partner.
