How not to leave the casino (take two)

Author: Simon Dexter

Further evidence, if any were needed, that playing online is considerably safer than visiting a casino, especially after you’ve enjoyed a decent run and ended the night a few quid ahead of the game, arrived from the Mediterranean earlier this week.

On Wednesday, The Times of Malta reported upon the case of James Mercieca and what happened to him as he was leaving a casino in the small town of Gzira, after a decent night at the poker and roulette tables.

Mr Mercieca had won around 0 and, feeling pretty pleased with himself, decided to forego his taxi ride and enjoy the gentle Mediterranean breeze with an invigorating walk home. After a while, he headed down a darkened street whereupon an attractive, well-dressed woman called him from across the road. Being a gentleman, Mercieca decided to investigate further – after all, what could go wrong on this beautiful evening?

It soon became apparent that this was no damsel in distress and the woman led the unsuspecting Mercieca to a bedroom inside a nearby house where a second woman was waiting. Thinking he’d hit the jackpot, Mercieca’s trousers were soon around his ankles, at which point a man shattered the ambiance by entering the room brandishing a rather large knife. The tarts with hearts subsequently took virtually all of Mercieca’s poker winnings, but left him with and presumably some timely advice to next time, catch a cab.

Later, Mr Mercieca said it was “an unwise decision to have a look,” and has since chalked the episode up to experience. A man, believed to be the knife-wielding assailant, was detained in police custody, although the whereabouts of the two women remains a mystery…
