It’s been a gruelling, historic, but ultimately rewarding EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo, the finale of which was reached last night when Glen Chorny collected EUR 2.02 million for winning Europe’s most valuable poker event. Further evidence of the tournament’s burgeoning status can be gleaned from the fact that more than a million (EUR 1.17 million) was paid out to Denes Kalo who finished second.
The EPT Grand Final attracted 842 entrants, almost 10% of whom (the top 80) won at least EUR 17,000; making last night’s final table was worth at least EUR 168,000.
With such sums at stake, nothing could be referred to as a ‘gimme’. The contest surrounding the money bubble, for example, developed into the most arduous ever seen in a major poker tournament. Indeed, it might well have gone down in poker folklore as the longest-ever bubble. With 81 players remaining, play went hand-for-hand. Ordinarily, the bubble might be expected to burst within half an hour, yet more than two and half hours later, there was still no sign of who would lose out on the dosh. Eventually, pro Surinder Sunar’s tournament came to a disappointing end as he finished in 81st place. Few present had ever witnessed anything like it, although this prolonged bubble battle says much for the exceptional standard of play on show.
There was more history on the third day when both Luca Pagano and his father Claudio became the first father and son to cash at the same EPT event. For Luca, it represented a ninth EPT cash. After being tied with Julian Thew on eight cashes apiece, Luca could now be considered as one of the EPT’s most consistent players.
