Harding ‘Poker Cabinet’ still the one to beat

Love her or loathe her, you have to admire Hillary Clinton’s tenacity as she’s circumvented the USA a million times (or so it seems) in search of the Democratic presidential nomination. According to several political commentators however, if elected, still something of a long-shot, she’s likely to turn into the worst US President ever.

While she would have some competition for that particular accolade, the worst incumbent to date, according to most American historians, is Warren G Harding who was President between 1921-23.

Harding actually received the highest majority a President has ever managed, whereupon he surrounded himself with buddies from his home state of Ohio who quickly became known as ‘The Ohio Gang’.

Largely ignoring affairs of state, Harding and his ‘Poker Cabinet’ devoted themselves to ceremonial appearances and hosting all-night parties. If you’re beginning to like the sound of this guy, his is perhaps most famous for his ability to drink all night, tell jokes and play poker. Indeed, on one occasion when he ran out of chips, he managed to gamble away all the White House china, the whereabouts of which remain a mystery to this day.
