The Poker World of Tony G

Author: Simon Dexter

If you are a keen watcher of poker on TV then you will no doubt be aware of the legend Tony G.

The Australian has the most bizarre, frightening and aggressive (but funny) playing style ever seen and his antics will blow you away when first seeing them.

Here’s an extract from a famous encounter he had with the Russian Ralph Perry. It certainly did nothing for east/west relations but made superb TV.

Tony gets A2 suited and decides to call with just Perry left in.

Tony: “I got a weak hand but I want to play with you.”

Perry has King Jack unsuited.

Ralph Perry raises 120,000

Tony: “I’m all in. If you want to do this, we do it properly.”

The Russian, in silly sunglasses and no expression on his face, is starting to get slightly annoyed.

Perry: “Call”

Tony (sarcastically) “You play well, you play very, very well.”

Tony: (quite nastily): “You’re a champion. (I’ll) send you back to Russia.”

The flop comes down giving Tony a deuce but no help to Perry who looks destroyed.

Tony: “Putting all his money in with King Jack. All-in. This is not someone to learn from.”

The turn is a seven and the river a six. Tony roars with delight and then launches into a tirade.

Tony: “Come on, Russian, get out. It’s time to go.”

He walks around the table to Perry, further goading him.

Tony: “Look how ugly this is! Look how he’s playing. You’re a professional player and I can do this to you. You are a terrible player. This is disgraceful. Bring more Russians on. Bring more Russians on. I’m here to get them all.”

Perry is still sat their nervously fiddling with his chips looking like a naughty schoolkid who has just been found out in a lie.

Tony: “You played that as bad as you could. Your career is finished. You are gone, gone, gone.”

Tony: “Feel the power, feel the power. Do you feel my power, baby?”

Perry tries to say well played but Tony ignores him and launches into another attack about his opponents weak Texas Hold’em strategy.

Tony: “Is this how you play? You call with King Jack? What school you been to? I’ve got you covered like a baby. Up, up and away. Come on. On your bike!”

The studio audience try to applaud as Perry slowly walks away.

Tony: “He doesn’t deserve any applause. He called with King, Jack. If you read my poker strategy, I always say never overplay King, Jack.

There are plenty of clips of Tony G in similar form on YouTube. Apparently, off the table, he is a very nice guy.

Play poker online at Littlewoodspoker.com. You won’t find anyone with Tony G’s chatter but you will find plenty of aggressive players. Can you deal with aggression?
