Bored of bad beats?

Author: Simon Dexter

They say you should keep bad beat stories to yourself, put them down to experience and move on. But I’ve never been one for taking any notice of what one should do so here is a tale of my own unluckiness. Feel free to click on another story if you cannot face another but perhaps hearing this may make you fell a little better about your own bitter stories.

I’d been playing a no-limit cash game for over five hours and by my standards was doing pretty well and was up far more than my talents deserved. Feeling a little tired, I decided the next hand would be my last and I could go to bed quite satisfied at the evening’s events.

I was dealt AA in the cut off and casually thought to myself that I would raise big and steal the blinds. A little bit extra and I could go to bed a happy man. This I did but the person in the Big Blind (with a bigger stack than me) decides to go all-in. I did have this terrible sense of dread but thought to myself what else could I do?

I called the bet and my opponent showed AKo/s. The odds were still in my favour as the flop was announced. Here comes the flop - “6, Q, 10″.

The astute and even the less astute will know what is possibly coming next (or very soon). The turn reveals a harmless 4. I knew before the river that the Jack was coming. There was nothing I could do about it. The bad beat was coming and it came for me.

Ok, so there it was, my worst
bad beat

story. It’s kind of better told live when I can use actions and facial expressions but I hope you got the idea. I’m not sure whether reading other player’s stories makes me feel better or just brings up memories of my own bad experiences.

It’s interesting to read these stories in the context they are told. The fact I had built up my stack that evening put the story into perspective. Could I have done anything else but play that hand? Well, I try not to think about it…too often.
