The latest EPT event starts in Poland next Tuesday when yet another bumper field is expected to compete for a first prize in excess of EUR 700,000; in the eight events to date, winners have trousered an average of EUR 880,000.
With two events remaining after next week’s showdown in Warsaw, these figures, together with the increased number of participants, provide a further indication of poker’s popularity.
The 2005/06 EPT consisted of seven events which attracted a shade over 2,000 qualifiers; the total prize pool was EUR 9.82 million. Last year’s tournament added one additional venue but witnessed a 73% increase in the number of players – little wonder given that the prize pool more than doubled to EUR 19.57 million.
During the current 2007/08 season, eight events have so far taken place and more than 4,000 qualifiers have battled over an aggregate prize pool of EUR 24.73 million. With events in San Remo and Monte Carlo still to come the EUR 30 million barrier looks certain to be surpassed.
