Chorny: This month Europe, next month the world?

Author: Simon Dexter

You were not alone if you hadn’t heard of Glen Chory, the 22-year old Canadian who won last week’s EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo before heading home with a cheque for a cool .19 million. Not bad for a guy who only turned professional in January.

In fact, he’s enjoyed a pretty decent time since joining poker’s professional ranks. He cashed at the EPT Caribbean tourney in January and won a WPT event the following week; these two successes meant that by the end of his first month as a full-time pro, the baby-faced “Dr C” had already banked 0,000. Quite a start.

Chory has been a big fan of online poker for four years now and unlike some newbies who want to chase the big money on their first day, the new EPT champ initially stuck with and tournaments – not to build his bankroll, but to accumulate experience. It would appear to have worked.
“I was playing multi-table tournaments but then I got into playing cash games and I really started to see the profit,” he said in Monte Carlo, describing a turning point in his poker career. “I enjoyed being able to sit down with a lot of blinds and see a lot of flops, which is really my style.” Most of us would concur, but Chorny recognised he had moved up in class on the Cote d’Azure as he found it hard to stick with his chosen strategy “because this has been a very competitive tournament.” No surprises there then, but Dr C has, nonetheless, remained modest: “I’ve had to play a lot tighter than I want to play [in Monte Carlo], but I’ve managed to hang on and run really good.” You could say that again. Most bookies price him at around 150/1 to win the Main Event at the WSOP which starts in Vegas next month; given the year he’s had, a few people might consider a modest flutter…
