Book review: Every Hand Revealed, by Gus Hansen

Author: Simon Dexter

Looking like a cross between the Addams Family’s Uncle Fester and former Italian football referee Pierluigi Collina, the brooding photograph of Gus Hansen adorning the cover of his latest literary offering might have some readers believe he’s off on some Banksy-related art project or has compiled a book of poker poetry. [That’s surely not a million miles off: Ed]

But looks, as regular poker players know, can be incredibly deceiving and Hansen, considered one of the game’s most accomplished exponents of the bluff, has fooled us again for his latest book, published earlier this month, could become one of poker’s benchmark texts.

Hansen goes through more than 300 of the hands he played during his run at the last “Aussie Millions” and analyses the thinking behind some of his (occasionally outrageous) moves and the psychology which drives the mechanics of his game.

There is no doubt that readers will pick up more than their fair share Hansen’s bluffing techniques and discover how to win when their hand is worth about as much as Alistair Darling’s credibility. One of the best techniques Hansen has little problem sharing with readers is how to raise with confidence when you’re out of position and have absolutely nothing in your hand.

Hansen goes into great detail when explaining how a tournament’s prize structure should determine how you play and he provides reams of information about how to work with unplayable hands without folding.

His advice is not for everyone – it would cause some players to have kittens, but in many respects, this makes it even more compelling; even if you don’t follow his suggestions, it’s worth reading. If nothing else, the book provides a great cover photo, although seriously, this is an excellent book for the contemporary – and courageous poker player.
