During the late 1950s and early 60s, many Americans were haunted by the prospect of marauding bikers racing through their well-kept towns, upsetting the locals and generally behaving well, badly. A similar sense of dread consumed some stuffier Britons when Mods and Rockers arrived on the scene in the early sixties. They could be found bombing down to Brighton and other seaside resorts every Bank Holiday, ostensibly in search of a good day out and a compulsory ruck.
Nowadays, bikers don’t instil the same sense of fear; they’re more likely to be fine upstanding members of the community, merely looking for a fun day out. A current group who fall into this category is the Norsemen MCC, a motorcycle club based in Hastings who will be hosting their 3rd annual poker run on 7th June.
Contenders have to race between five different pubs in a seventy mile radius, collecting a playing card at each hostelry which will allow them to complete their hand before the evening’s festivities which centre upon poker. Over the last two years, more than 300 people have taken part and in excess of £1,000 has been raised for charity and good causes.
The contest isn’t only open to bikers: scooterists and trikers are also more than welcome to participate.
