Ahead in the Poles

Author: Simon Dexter

On the flight out to Nice for our mid-February ‘fact-finding’ trip to Monaco, one newspaper headline advised that, like a good many of the indgenous UK population, a growing number of Poles are leaving the UK, forced out by high taxes and still exhorbitant house prices. And who can blame them?
We’re hoping their numbers will be given a further boost in a few weeks when poker players head east to Warsaw for the Polish Open, scheduled to take place between 11th-15th March.

There’s still time to qualify for this event in one of Europe’s most fascinating cities, won last year by Peter Jespen from Denmar who walked away with more than 325,000 euros. Last year’s field of 283 is expected to be surpassed next month, although the organisers have capped entry at 400 runers which we reckon is a pretty decent incentive for players not over keen on taking on bigger fields. This does not mean that a smaller field size equates to lower quality, far from it, but there’s definitely a great chance of competent players making progress. A win in Warsaw may even permit you not to quibble with your plumber’s bill, which is bound to rise now that half the Poles plyng their much-needed trade here have had enough.
