Even if visitors to bricks and mortar casinos find their chip stack decimated, they generally end up with a dollar or two’s worth of chips in their back pocket which, as many subsequently discover, is of little use when it comes to paying for a taxi fare. Nonetheless, frequent chip ‘collectors’ may be inclined to check whether they trousered anything by mistake when visiting the now defunct Showboat Casino, which operated in Las Vegas between 1954 and 2001.

Okay, it’s unlikely, but even a $1 chip could be worth a fortune. Earlier this week, the wonderfully-named Casino Chip & Gaming Token Collectors Club revealed that one of its collectors had bought a rare $1 chip for a staggering $28,988.88, the highest sum ever paid for such a lowly denomination.

The seller, a lady called Sandy Marbs, said she picked the chip up during a visit to Las Vegas in 1960. “I saved it because it had a boat on it that reminded me of Missouri,” she recalled. Sandy had only recently started selling things on eBay for fun and after rummaging through her belongings, happened upon the chip which she though might generate a few dollars. Bidding started at $2.25, but before long, she was turning away email bids of $5,000. According to the CCGTCC, the chip is only the third known surviving $1 Showboat chip, but the price paid gives another example of the value of poker’s paraphernalia.
