Accessories for poker players, Part I

Author: Simon Dexter

If a measure of a game’s popularity is the extent to which manufacturers of every conceivable product want to have their wares associated with it, or slap their branding on it, then poker has truly arrived. Towards the end of last year, we reported on the poker-related ‘tat’ (for want of a better word) then flooding the shelves and online stores at an unseemly rate in time for the annual Christmas splurge on rubbish. We contemplated having a ‘Tasteless poker item of the year’ award, but a) there were too many contenders and b) we were pushed for time.

We’re unsure about the latest poker-related gadget which arrived in our shops earlier this week. A USB memory stick could hardly be called ‘tat’ or tasteless, although we wonder why anyone would want one in the shape of an ‘authentic-looking’ poker chip. The red chip has a smaller (1.0 GB) memory, while the blue version has twice that capacity.

Granted, you can get a USB Flash Drive in the shape of a Swiss Army knife, complete with real-life blades and those essential scissors “to carry your data securely and in style” for less than £18, but when you can pick up a 1.0 GB memory stick for less than a fiver and a 2.0GB version for £6.99, why pay $29 for a poker chip? Mind you, when you take a look at our next story, perhaps there is some merit in buying one and hiding it away for half a century…
