Early success proves Michael’s the real deal

by Simon Dexter Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

When he set off for Vegas last week with the promise of trying to achieve the first part of his unique double - a WSOP* bracelet (to go with his as-yet missing Oscar), he was given hearty cheers by all of us here at Littlewoods Towers, but we didn’t expect Michael Greco to score quite so quickly.

by Simon Dexter Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

A report by accountants PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP released on Tuesday revealed that when measured in monetary terms, poker‘s popularity, together with the rest of the gaming industry, continues to grow - and then some. The report estimated that by 2012, the world’s gaming revenue will exceed $155 billion.

New rules for final table? You tell us…

by Simon Dexter Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

This year’s split WSOP* (the final table actually takes place in November) has prompted some bright sparks to suggest the re-introduction of a long-discarded protocol last used in 1970 whereby the final table players vote to decide who they believe should be world champion.
This might sound far-fetched, but the first WSOP*, held at Binion’s Horseshoe casino, was won by Johnny Moss (who also won the following year, collecting $30,000).

Poker: the new golf

by Simon Dexter Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

It didn’t take business owner Deepak Thadani long to discover that successful poker players have much in common with successful business people: “It’s not the hands that you’re dealt,” he says, “it’s the way you play them that separates the regulars from the pros. Just like in business.”

2,500/1 shot an each-way shout?

by Simon Dexter Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

We were so impressed with new Littlewoods Poker pro Michael Greco’s display of confidence when it came to winning an Oscar and a world title that we were almost persuaded to follow him Stateside. Apart from it being a pretty decent gig, we reckon he has a chance of following on from Jerry Yang last year who came in from left field and scooped $8.25 million. Unfortunately, head office refused our request for return business class flights to Nevada.

Dozing off can be good - sometimes

by Simon Dexter Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

With record number of entrants in several of the preliminary WSOP* tournaments, quite a few have developed into lengthy affairs with 2am and 3am finishes not unusual. On several occasions, more than one player has had to be prodded into action by a neighbour when it was their turn to play. There has even been reports of one guy falling off his chair when he fell asleep.

Poker dads

by Simon Dexter Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

An unusual press release arrived at Littlewoods Poker Towers advising of a poker-related parenting book (we kid you not) that has won the “Good Parenting Seal” from an American website called Parental Wisdom. We consider this commendable and congratulate author Mark Borowski for his work, entitled Big Slick Daddy: Poker Strategies for Parenting Success.
Not surprisingly, the book is aimed primarily at blokes.

Book review: The Ultimate Guide to Poker Tells, by Randy Burgess & Carl Baldassarre

by Simon Dexter Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

In many respects, Mike Caro’s classic “Caro’s Book of Poker Tells” remains the definitive work on the subject, yet it’s interesting to note that despite the incredible number of poker-related books published since it was first published, few have sought to develop Caro’s themes. Now Burgess and Baldassarre (B&B) endeavour to do so in their enjoyable, informative text.
