Hi guys,

In these days when everything is supposedly checked a zillion times over, does chip dumping still go on in tournaments?

ER,

That’s a good question and is obviously dependent upon the size of the tournament you’re talking about - ie is it worthwhile for cheats to do this?

We reckon the threshold can be surprisingly low. The most common method of player collusion we’ve witnessed is at small buy-in no-limit tournaments where a minimum of two players who have an agreement to share their winnings (and losses) subsequently play against each other very aggressively, with the intention of having one player end up with all of their chips. In other words, player A ‘dumps’ his chips with player B in the hope that he will go on and prove successful.

The problem for tournament directors and other observers is that chip dumping can occur at any point. Even in tournaments where players who are colluding are assigned to different tables, they usually agree to execute the move if they get to the same table. What can make matters worse is that in a number of small, land-based buy-in tournaments, casinos (incredibly) allow players to choose their starting table and seat, so colluders can simply pick seats at the same table. If you’re playing at a land-based casino, it’s a ploy to be conscious of, although it highlights the benefit of playing online.
