How not to leave the casino (take two)

by Simon Dexter Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Further evidence, if any were needed, that playing online is considerably safer than visiting a casino, especially after you’ve enjoyed a decent run and ended the night a few quid ahead of the game, arrived from the Mediterranean earlier this week.

New rules anyone?

by Simon Dexter Thursday, July 31st, 2008

More than one player saw fit to complain about apparent last-minute amendments made to the tournament rules during the recent WSOP* in Las Vegas; indeed, several observers felt they were executed solely to accommodate higher-profile players. Conscious of this, professional poker players Marcel Luske and Michelle Lau have established the rather grand-sounding Federation Internationale de Poker Association (FIDPA), together with the International Poker Rules (IP Rules).

by Simon Dexter Thursday, July 31st, 2008

For more than a year, an increasing number of Americans have advocated an end to the ban on internet gambling and this week came news that their ranks had been swollen by two rather influential individuals – associate professors Kathryn LaTour, from the University of Nevada and June Cotte, from the University of Western Ontario in Canada.

Book review: Poker Night, by John Vorhaus

by Simon Dexter Thursday, July 31st, 2008

What is the definition of a ‘good poker book’? It’s a question we often ponder over here at Littlewoods Poker Towers for there are two distinct schools of thought. Book review: Farha on Omaha, By Sam Farha.

Be thankful that he has for you won’t get much of this guy at the table.

Rule row continues

by Simon Dexter Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Following diva-like histrionics from several high-profile players at this year‘s WSOP*, calls for a standardised set of tournament rules continue to grow louder after the veracity of at least two was called into question.

Must try harder?

by Simon Dexter Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Littlewoods Poker pro Michael Greco joined a surprisingly small band of British and Irish players who returned home from Vegas clutching WSOP* cheques. Michael cashed early in the series but was unable to repeat this success, although he was not alone. There were two sizeable cashes for home players, but only one bracelet, proving just how difficult it is to win on American soil.

Critics pan “All In”

by Simon Dexter Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

As the film version of Mamma Mia! continues to take even more money at the box office, thus proving that Abba’s music can sell anything, spare a thought for another musical which appears unlikely to be heading for the West End.

A female world champ before 2018?

by Simon Dexter Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

In one of her many post-tournament interviews, former poker reporter Tiffany ‘Hot Chips’ Michelle (such a fantastic name), who won 4k for finishing 17th in the WSOP* main event, said it would be “neat to be viewed in a different way”, by which we think she meant as a poker player too. Tiffany is not exactly from the Germaine Greer school of right-on feminism, but her progress has inspired many more women to believe that they too can compete at poker.
