We need more people like Stuart Wheeler, the guy currently making a decent fist of suing the Government over the Lisbon Treaty which, he says, is merely a rather poorly disguised version of the EU constitution.

From the ashes of Britain’s ‘super casino’ fiasco comes light after Lord McNally of Blackpool declared this week that gambling licences could be transferred to the seaside resort if they are not taken up by other towns. His comments came during a debate which confirmed legislation to allow 16 new large and small casinos to open.

Hi guys.
I’m told that using a ‘stopper bet’ is an ideal strategy for cash game players when they’re first to act on the river, but could you explain whether it should be used primarily to reduce losses or to catch a bluff?

It’s the nature of the poker beast that occasionally, the word ‘cheat’ will arise. It is perhaps the game’s strongest five-letter word, so before uttering it, would-be accusers had better be sure of their facts.

Looking like a cross between the Addams Family’s Uncle Fester and former Italian football referee Pierluigi Collina, the brooding photograph of Gus Hansen adorning the cover of his latest literary offering might have some readers believe he’s off on some Banksy-related art project or has compiled a book of poker poetry. [That’s surely not a million miles off: Ed]

Hi Guys.
I read a lot about gauging how you’re doing when it comes to poker’s main aim, winning cash, but is there a simple guide which allows players to keep an eye on their financial progress?
FP, Guildford
FP,
Shrewd poker players measure their performance by considering what is known as their “return on investment”, a phrase familiar to accountants and City types, which you will often see referred to as ROI. Calculating your ROI is very straight forward.
To do so, you should divide your total profits by the aggregate cost of your entry fees and convert it into a percentage.
For instance, imagine you play in a + S&G: the aggregate entry cost is . Imagine you win the first prize of 5. Your net profit is 2 (5 - ). Dividing this figure by 33 and multiplying by 100 gives you your percentage return which in this case is an impressive 309%.
Imagine you play 20 S&G’s for each, your total buy-in is 0. Now let’s assume you’re in the money in half of them and your total amount of prize money is 0, in which case your net profit is 0. If we divide this figure by 0, your ROI is an impressive 34.7%, significantly greater than you would get at your high street bank - or most other places, come to think of it.
A decent ROI for S&G’s is between 20% and 50%, although don’t forget that as your buy-in increases, so the quality of your opponents improves. Nevertheless, achieving 20% of 8 is significantly better than 50% of ; in other words, there’s no need to stay at the lower levels just to achieve a higher ROI.

Writing in the Houston Chronicle this week, Daniel Negreanu pondered over the forthcoming WSOP* and said that the winner will be the one who uses the competition’s (rather stingy) breaks to their best advantage.

Are poker enthusiasts beginning to get the upper hand on mainland Europe? Across the continent, several governments are terrified that their state-run gaming organisations will lose their monopoly grip (and billions in what is effectively a leisure time tax) when the inevitable eventually happens. This week, there was a major victory in Denmark for those who abhor the state’s perennial interference in our lives when the Danish Poker Federation won their case at the country’s Supreme Court. The court found that tournament poker in privately-owned Danish clubs is legal.

Love her or loathe her, you have to admire Hillary Clinton’s tenacity as she’s circumvented the USA a million times (or so it seems) in search of the Democratic presidential nomination. According to several political commentators however, if elected, still something of a long-shot, she’s likely to turn into the worst US President ever.

News that Britain’s first ‘bricks and mortar’ poker camp is scheduled to open next spring will have many of us reminiscing about Scout camps where we feasted upon cheap sausages almost half-cooked on an open fire, downed with surreptitiously concealed canned lager with an ABV of 2%. More adventurous sorts used such camps as a base from where raids on an adjoining Girl Guide site could be launched, the raison d’etre of which always seemed to nick one of their hats rather than anything more daring.
