Every poker student has heard of Mike Caro, the self-styled professor of poker. He has become a one-man industry, publishing books on strategy and tells, as well as instructional videos and DVDs; there are many others who have tried to emulate Caro, but unlike most of the pretenders to his crown, he has the happy knack of making his content readable.

One wonders how governments across the globe, a number of whom take a decidely anti-poker, anti-gaming, anti-fun stance (unless it’s state-controlled, of course) will react to this week’s news from Australia and the US.

Another week, another poker movie, this time The Grand likely to be screened here later in the year. Starring Woody Harrelson and with cameo appearances from leading poker players such as Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth and Doyle Brunson, a number of US critics have called it “the best poker-themed movie since Rounders.” The only problem with such praise is that it doesn’t have much to beat.

With so much testosterone flying around the Monte Carlo Bay hotel and with so much money at stake, it’s hardly surprising that matters occasionally got out of hand. Nevertheless, few people batted an eyelid when Joe Hachem and Woody Deck had a ‘handbags’ moment. Deck wasn’t even playing in the hand which led to their altercation, but he was annoyed when Hachem opted not to show his mucked cards. Voices grew louder, fingers were pointed and stances were taken before security guards were called in to calm things down.

It’s been a gruelling, historic, but ultimately rewarding EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo, the finale of which was reached last night when Glen Chorny collected EUR 2.02 million for winning Europe’s most valuable poker event. Further evidence of the tournament’s burgeoning status can be gleaned from the fact that more than a million (EUR 1.17 million) was paid out to Denes Kalo who finished second.

Hi,
I cannot complain about my recent poker play as I have been enjoying a great run, generally cashing, ie finishing in the top seven or eight players, but have yet to turn what I think is consistent play into winning play. I’m ahead of the game, money-wise, but feel I should be moving on and converting decent finishes into winning ones – or should I be content to keep getting into the money?

At some point in our poker careers, most of us will have been labelled a ‘fish’ by our opponents, even though most of them will have been delighted to see us at the table! It’s a derogatory label slapped onto the greenhorn which we seek to divest ourselves of as rapidly as possible, usually by playing more poker in order that we learn about the game.
