As our short piece regarding poker’s burgeoning popularity elsewhere in this week’s SFTW indicates, a growing number of people clearly start playing the game every day. While it’s encouraging to see a steady flow of poker-related books dealing with more advanced strategies and appealing to intermediate and experienced players, there is still plenty of scope for books such as this which are targeted at the novice.

Hi guys!
I don’t normally write to any kind of forum, but I am so cheesed off at a succession of “poker dopes” I seem to have run up against over the last few weeks that I had to ask whether I’m the only one who finds them frequently going all-in with absolute junk? What makes it even more annoying is the number of times one of them get lucky and hit their long shot hands! Is it just me or do others suffer the same fate?

Some sad news arrived this week as we heard of the untimely death of poker cult Brandi Rose Hawbaker at the age of just 26. She was found last Sunday in Los Angeles; an autopsy concluded the cause of death as suicide.
Anyone who saw the gregarious Hawbaker play could not fail to be impressed by her gregarious personality and composed manner at the table. Her adventures and stunning good looks ensured she was one of America’s most talked about poker personalities. Within a short period of arriving on the poker scene, she had online fan clubs, dominated poker forums and several blogs covered her every move.
Indeed, she was not averse to posting her own comments and stories on several poker forums if she felt a comment had been derogatory, a trait which endeared her to her army of fans. But life had not been easy and according to a former boyfriend, she suffered from “ a very serious and untreatable mental illness” which caused her to visit several doctors over the past eighteen months, sadly to no avail. She will be sorely missed.
Despite a handful of gloomy predictions and several blatant examples of what could only be described as restrictive practices, poker’s popularity continues to grow. Furthermore, that’s not simply the sort of phoney, baseless statement of which the government’s spin doctors would be proud, the figures speak for themselves.

Here’s a quiz question: what long-standing poker record was broken at last year’s WPT Spanish Championship, won by Marcus Lehmann? It’s nothing to do with unusual hands or the speed with which Lehmann claimed his Iberian crown. In fact, he could have been romping to victory when a ‘what happened next’ moment occurred.

You were not alone if you hadn’t heard of Glen Chory, the 22-year old Canadian who won last week’s EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo before heading home with a cheque for a cool $3.19 million. Not bad for a guy who only turned professional in January.

Hi Guys.
I’ve been playing poker for two years. Eventually, I would like to play professionally and have been spending perhaps 20 hours a week playing low stakes limit Hold ‘em in order to examine the specific nuances of positional play. I recognise the role ego plays in poker, although perhaps I’m still mis-reading opponents, but then, I also appreciate that I’m not up against the world’s greatest players at these tables. Perhaps I should consider moving up a few levels to learn more?
