In a land steeped in storytelling tradition, the tale of how the Irish Poker Open originated has, over the course of more than a quarter of a century, assumed mythical proportions.
Legend has it that back in the late Seventies, Terry Rogers, a famous Irish bookmaker and keen poker player, became a regular visitor to Las Vegas where he first encountered the World Series of Poker. Renowned for his outgoing nature, Terry befriended poker legends such as Benny Binion and Doyle Brunson and would later be credited as the man responsible for introducing no limit Texas Hold ‘Em to Europe.

Hi,
I read recently (not here) that online poker players who call a raise a little too quickly are likely to be on a draw. Armed with this information, I re-raised an opponent I saw do this and duly ran straight into a monster hand. I ended up getting busted out of the tournament simply because I thought I had picked-up an online tell. What did I do wrong?

It’s a side of poker that rarely makes the news, but that doesn’t mean to say it’s any less deserving of note than those one-sided, anti-gaming rants we occasionally hear.
Over the past few years, there’s been a marked increase in the number of stars who carve out the time to make valuable, little-heralded contributions to charitable causes; some, such as Barry Greenstein, regularly donate a large portion of poker winnings, frequently handing over the entire purse.

Following the GUKPT event in London at the beginning of the month, a number of shrewd punters had seen enough to place a modest wager on a man with a nom de guerre that might not exactly inspire confidence. In a world where many poker players ensure their nicknames reflect the size of their ego, Badbeat is the sort of self-deprecating title which either indicates a lack of confidence or is designed as the subtlest double-bluff.

Most poker players who regularly don their plus-fours and golfers who frequently engage in a game or seven of poker often refer to the similarities between the two games. The need for constant focus is common to both, attention to detail imperative and when you’re ‘in the zone’ either on the fairways or at the felt, there’s an excellent chance you’ll come out ahead.

As is the case with all Bank Holidays nowadays, most people end up supplementing their statutory break either by using some legitimate holiday entitlement or throwing a sickie. Your correspondent did the former this week and ended up playing a few games of poker and finally finding time to read through the words of wisdom to be found in several poker blogs. What an experience.
