Julian Thew’s stunning success in the GUKPT event in Brighton last weekend confirmed his status as one of Britain’s best young players. He only started playing around six years ago, but his two 2008 cashes have already generated $192,000 for him this year.

With the exception of the Grand Final, last year’s German Open proved to be the EPT’s most valuable event. Almost 500 players competed for a prize pool of 2.3 million euros only for Norwegian Andreas Hoivold to emerge victorious, pocketing 672,000 euros in the process. Book review: Poker Nation By Andy Bellin
Yellow Jersey Press
Among the plethora of occasionally dry poker instruction books dealing with strategy and instruction, from time to time, you may happen upon a title which, (shock, horror) actually tells a story. Poker Nation is one such tome, an autobiographical account of how one guy, while studying for a Masters degree in astrophysics, fell in love with poker. It is a marvellously amusing ride, replete with tales of high stakes poker, low-rent establishments and a cast of characters that any Hollywood director would die for.

While most of us might be suffering from post-Christmas blues and dreading the dull thud of the latest credit card bill as it tumbles through the letterbox, there appear to be no such concerns in the Far East.

Green visors were originally worn by clerks, beleaguered newspaper editors and others who spent their working lives reading text in brightly-lit surrounds. It’s possible that card dealers began wearing them for the same reason, although they have since become a readily-identifiable badge of office in every poker room.
