Playing Under the Gun

by Simon Dexter Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Whenever I’m playing under the gun, my attitude changes completely. Even after quite a few years playing poker, it still makes me feel as though I’m in a heads-up confrontation with Doyle Brunson. Is this because I’m an inherently conservative player (I need a great hand to become aggressive), a wimp, or have not yet understood the correct strategy for playing and winning when under the gun?

by Simon Dexter Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Poker 7 Backgammon 0

by Simon Dexter Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

For years, backgammon has been known as ‘the poker of the Mediterranean’, its exponents claiming there is a greater skill element involved in playing the game than in poker.

While it’s true that backgammon has been around much longer than poker, that doesn’t necessarily mean it is a game requiring more skill to play well. There are those of us who don’t want to enter a pot in a no-limit or cash game by having to raise every time. But calling is increasingly deemed to be for those of a hesitant nature.

Not surprisingly, Annette Obrestad became the youngest player ever to win the “Tournament Performance of the Year” award at the prestigious European Poker Awards in Paris last weekend.
