Omaha Hi Strategy & Tips

Texas Holdem to Omaha High - don't be fooled

Although Omaha Hi poker is very similar to Texas Hold em in many ways you cannot follow the Texas Holdem basic strategy and get the best results with Omaha Hi online. In Texas Hold em the chance of someone holding the very highest hands possible is half of that in Omaha High (Texas deals 2 cards, Omaha deals 4 cards). For this reason many Texas players play aggressively with second rate, weaker hands. Playing this way online in Omaha Hi will lead to an unsuccessful long run because it is twice more likely other people have got the two cards (the nuts).

Good, strong hands are a common occurrence in Omaha High, the hands go to a showdown much less than its similar counterparts. For this reason, if you find yourself heading towards the showdown make sure you have the top available hand; because if you don't have it, the likely hood is that your online showdown opponent will. Straights and flushes are common in Omaha Hi, do not bet too strongly with such a tempting hand and waste a lot of money waiting for a deciding card to come from the fourth and river card.

Finally, as stated in the Littlewoods Online Poker rules, in Omaha Hi you must play 2 out of the 4 cards you have in your hand. Don't be fooled into thinking you have a flush or straight because only one of your cards completes the hand. This may be the case in Texas Holdem but will not work on Omaha Hi.
